Branding Event Draws State-Level Attention

January 25, 2007

The "Bartlesville Gets Branded" kickoff event has attracted attention at the state level, with Lt. Governor Jari Askins joining in the unveiling of the community's new brand next Thursday, February 1.

Askins, who recently visited the city and met with residents, is expected to talk briefly about Bartlesville's pace-setter role in presenting a positive, dynamic image of Oklahoma in its centennial year.

The event will be held from 5-6 p.m. at the Bartlesville Community Center. The unveiling program begins at 5:30 p.m. with special staging and the debut of a new video about Bartlesville.

A $5 admission includes beverages, snacks and a useful high-tech work tool. Reservations, which are recommended, can be made by calling the Bartlesville Regional Chamber of Commerce at 336-8708.

"Bartlesville Gets Branded" is being organized by the Bartlesville Branding Team, an informal group of local communications and community relations professionals who volunteered their time to develop an up-to-date identity for the city. Their objective was to capture the essence of the "new Bartlesville" in a single, compelling phrase.

OWU President Everett Piper, who has been one of several resource persons to the branding team, will serve as emcee for the kickoff event. "We're delighted that the Lt. Governor can join us for the unveiling," Piper said. "Her strong interest in community improvement, economic development and tourism are in perfect alignment with what we hope to accomplish with the new Bartlesville brand."

Born and reared in Duncan, Oklahoma, Jari Askins was sworn in as Oklahoma's 15th Lieutenant Governor in 2007, giving her the rare distinction of being involved in public service in all three branches of government.

Askins received her BA in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma and earned a Juris Doctorate from the OU College of Law. She served as Special District Judge for the District Court of Stephens County for eight years, from 1982-1990. In 1991, the Governor appointed her to the Pardon and Parole Board, which elected her as its first woman Chairman. She later served as Executive Director of the Pardon and Parole Board and as Deputy General Counsel to the Governor.

Askins was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1994 from District 50, and served for twelve years, earning the position of Democratic House Leader in 2005. She won the statewide election as Lieutenant Governor in 2006, becoming the first Democratic woman to serve in that office. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame in 2001.
